What Will Health Work in Africa Look Like in 2040? Future Scenarios and a Novel Approach to Produce More Health Workers in Kenya

Session Date: April 22, 2021

Session Description: Scenarios are stories about the future that help us make better decisions today. In this interactive session, IntraHealth International presents three plausible scenarios for health work in sub-Saharan Africa in 2040, and by extension the future of health workforce development. The scenarios participants will consider capture a range of future possibilities—good and bad, expected and surprising. Irrespective to the future that will unfold, we need to support increasing supply of competent and motivated health workers that meet the future health needs. We will introduce our experience in a novel student approach in Kenya. In 2013, IntraHealth International with funding from USAID in partnership with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the private sector, and the MOH established the Afya Elimu Fund (AEF). The fund targets needy students who cannot afford medical training and those from underserved regions.
