Sobering Truth: How Governments and the Development Community Incentivize Alcohol Death, Disease and Injury Across the World
Session Date: April 21, 2021
Session Description: Harmful alcohol consumption results in 3 million deaths annually and is a leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCD’s). Despite this global burden, governments and development agencies give billions of dollars to the alcohol industry. This session will present findings from a first-of-its-kind report on the types of incentives the alcohol industry receives, illustrate the direct conflict of interest between the economic objectives of incentives given to the alcohol industry and public health objectives and provide recommendations for policies that promote health.
