Zika: Emergency Response to Sustainable Intervention
Through a dynamic and interactive description of the Zika AIRS Project, we will present the nature of an emergency response to Zika in Latin America and the Caribbean and progress to date. Through a systems-strengthening lens key to Zika preparedness and response, we will highlight the importance of continuous entomological monitoring and vector control interventions, rapid response to incident upticks and resiliency to outbreaks. We will also discuss the long-term impacts of mosquito-borne illnesses (arboviruses) in the region – Zika, Dengue, chikungunya and others! – and the opportunities to improve countries’ abilities to respond to them in the future. We will share highlights from our experiences building country capacity through technical training, development of university certification programs, and strengthening of mosquito research and monitoring infrastructure.
