Using Data to Strengthen Immunization: Thinking Outside the Box

The use of high-quality routine immunization (RI) data is critical to service providers, managers, and partners aiming to improve immunization coverage. USAID’s Maternal and Child Survival Program is facilitating cross-learning across its 11 immunization country programs to improve RI data generation, quality, and use and encourage managers to use process indicators for real time decision-making to improve immunization services. This session will discuss lessons learned around the feasibility, usefulness, and accuracy of common RI process indicators, as well as innovations used by MCSP and partners to promote the generation, quality, and use of RI data. Strategies include: infant tracking methods and GIS technology for mapping and better estimating target populations, and “low-tech” methods for faster and easier data collection and analysis by health workers.
