The Surgical Safety Checklist: Demonstrating a Low-Tech C-section Simulator

Increasingly, the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is being used in operating theaters worldwide. Its goal is to reduce medical errors by ensuring readiness and improving communication and teamwork in operating theaters. There will always be unforeseen complications during surgery, but preparedness, standardizing best practices, and team communication can reduce mortality and morbidity. The simulator helps learners practice proper surgical technique while observing and explaining the anatomy with each step. The SSC also reduces traditional “top down” hierarchy, which discourage many operating theater staff from speaking up at critical moments. The SSC helps empower all surgical team members to take responsibility for delivering quality care and responding to situational needs. Participants will actively engage in learning through role-playing a C-section scenario on a simulator.
