Learning Through Doing: Early Childhood Development in Fragile Contexts

A landmark study released by The Lancet in October 2016 identified “nurturing care” as the package of health, nutrition, security and safety, responsive caregiving, and early learning services that the youngest children need to thrive. Extreme poverty and conflict can break down these connections. In May 2018, the WHO is planning on launching a Nurturing Care Framework to “inspire common action and promote common results” toward whole-of-society interventions for quality, well-rounded approaches to child development. This session will bring together multidisciplinary experts to educate participants on the science behind and the implementation of evidence-based interventions focused on “learning through doing,” specifically children learning through play and educating caretakers on responsive caregiving. These two interventions will be examined through the lens of crisis and fragile contexts.
