A Total Market Approach for UHC: Strategic Engagement of the Private Sector for Global Health Goals

Increasingly, donors and governments recognize the importance of working with the private sector to reach goals related to universal health coverage. Yet, such engagement is limited—the private sector is often perceived with distrust, and public officials lack the support or know-how to proceed with key stewardship and financing relationships. Furthermore, there is no “one-size-fits-all” private sector solution; rather, programs must be tailored based on how the private sector fits into the health market. In this session, participants will learn about one lens for developing strategies that increase access to health products and services in the private sector – the total market approach – and how it supports achieving UHC. Participants will also explore and employ four factors – political, economic, organizational, and legal – that facilitate or constrain effective public-private engagement in pursuit of these goals.
