Employing Youth-Centered Design in Sexual and Reproductive Health Programming Adaptations in Sub-Saharan Africa During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Session Date: April 21, 2021

Session Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many health programs involving young people are operating. As organizations rapidly learn to adapt methods in line with local regulations and public health best practices, we must convene young people, implementing organizations, researchers, policy makers, healthcare professionals, and other key stakeholders to share knowledge, best practices and insights to ensure the core objectives of youth-centered design (YCD) are at the forefront. Grassroot Soccer (GRS) will host a session showcasing use of YCD which has been foundational for GRS and its partners in adapting adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programs and embracing cutting edge solutions in Sub-saharan Africa throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Featured case studies will include: 1. A Multi-channel Approach in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa to Deliver Youth-Centered Sport- and Play-based COVID-19 Information as well as Sustained SRH and Psychosocial support (GRS) 2. Launching a Rapid ‘Design Sprint’ to Promote Adolescent SRH Self-care in Kenya (IDEO.org) 3. Virtual Facilitation of SRH Programming through Near-peer Mentors in Nigeria (Youth Empowerment Development Initiative)
